What Is Chakra Crystal Jewellery?
For some people, choosing jewellery is about what you like, what you can afford or what goes with an outfit. For others, picking jewellery is about something personal, something with meaning. Birthstone jewellery is an example of this. Another example is jewellery based on the ideas of chakras – often known as chakra jewellery or chakra crystal jewellery. But what is it and how do you use it to select what to wear?
What is a chakra?
The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘wheel’ and refers to the belief that there are centres of energy at specific points of the body. Chakras are energy centres that help regulate the human body and cover all the main systems including the heart and immune system as well as the emotions.
There are seven chakras located from the top of the head through to the base of the spine and each is associated with a colour, vibrational frequency and has specific functions. These are:
- Crown: wisdom, transcendence, universality
- Third eye: extrasensory perception, intuition, inspiration
- Throat: personal truth, etheric, expression
- Heart: compassion, love, integration
- Solar plexus: will, social self, power
- Sacral: emotions, creativity, sexuality
- Root: safety, grounding, right to live

A part of this belief system incorporates chakra crystals and their meanings as well as the balancing and opening of the chakras. I’m not expert in the topic so I’m not going to delve too deeply into these areas apart from the using and wearing of crystals, especially from the viewpoint of jewellery.
Chakras and colours
Another big association for each chakra is a colour and itself the colours have meaning in the system. The colours are associated with the type of vibration of frequency that radiates through that particular chakra and is used in yogic and other traditions for healing.
- Crown – white or pale purple – the universal, connection with spirituality, consciousness
- Third eye – purple or indigo blue – intuition, extrasensory perception, inner wisdom
- Throat – blue – self-expression, expression of the truth, creative expression, communication, perfect form, patterns
- Heart – green – love, relating to others, integration, compassion
- Solar plexus – yellow – mental activities, intellect, personal power, will
- Sacral – orange – emotions, creativity, sexuality, water, flow
- Root – red – survival, grounding, nourishment from the earth

Chakra and crystal healing
The connection between the chakras, colours and traits is also carried into an association with gemstones so there are stones associated with each one. Pairing a gemstone with its energy centre can increase the power of the stone while other combinations can create harmony. Typical associated gemstones with the different chakras are:
- Crown – purple – amethyst, diamond, quartz, selenite
- Third eye – indigo – amethyst, black obsidian, purple fluorite
- Throat – blue – aquamarine, lapis lazuli, turquoise
- Heart – green – green calcite, green tourmaline, jade, rose quartz
- Solar plexus – yellow – calcite, citrine, malachite, topaz
- Sacral – orange – carnelian, citrine, coral, moonstone
- Root – red – agate, black tourmaline, bloodstone, hematite, tigers eye
How to wear healing crystals
While there’s no way to know for certain if the crystal can heal or help balance your body, if you want to work with them assuming that they do, there are two main ways to gain the benefits of the stone.
First, you can wear them gemstones in necklaces with round shapes being the most popular. This is believed to spread the energy of the stone across your entire body and helps to neutralise energy blockages that can cause ill health. It is also an easy way to wear chakra crystal jewellery as it looks like a simple piece of costume jewellery.
Secondly, you can place the crystal near the place in the body that the benefits are required. This can be a little harder to do, especially with some of the lower chakras. It is believed to focus the energy of the stone to the specific chakra.
Chakra crystal jewellery cleansing
The final point to mention is that believers in chakras say you should regularly cleanse your crystal jewellery. This is different to just cleaning it and is about clearing away the negative energy that can cling to the stone while it helps to cleanse your body. There are a few ways to do it – water rinsing, a salt bed, plant rejuvenation or a sunbath. You should also store cleansed stones in a drawer, container or a jewellery roll when not being worn.
Choosing chakra crystal jewellery
Wearing jewellery for its benefits for your chakras is something that many people do and have done for thousands of years. While I can’t say how much benefit there is to the system, it certainly has its believers and is a way to choose jewellery with meaning and maybe even some benefits to your health and wellbeing.
